Before you start planning a trip, you must have a good idea of what you’ll need to bring along. Here is a list of items you should have on your next backpacking trip.

The Right Backpack

It would be best if you packed a maximum of 50 to 80 liters for extended backpacking trips, such as multiple weekends. If you plan an overnight trip, you can carry a smaller pack. When choosing a backpack, it’s important to consider carrying capacity and overall fit.

Beverage Storage

Regardless of the type of filter you’re using, it’s essential to bring the necessary tools to clean it. If you’re using a UV purifier, get a mesh pre-filter if you expect water that’s not pure mountain water. Also, if you plan to store your filter in a bag, ensure it’s protected from freezing temperatures.


A tent is a great beginner-friendly option due to its combination of protection and livable space. A good choice for warm weather is a hammock, though this may require a lot of setup and tree selection. A lightweight alternative is a tarp, which can be used to protect yourself from rain or to guard against cold. While these are both space-saving and comfortable, they lack protection against bugs.

Food Options

The food you should pack depends on your physiology, trail conditions, and pace. A daily allowance of around 2,000 to 5,000 calories is a rough range for most people. However, if you’re planning on reducing weight, packing more food than you think you need can help.

Clothes and Footwear

Ideally, you should only wear synthetic or wool layers for the best thermal regulation. Bring enough rain gear if you plan on backpacking in high-altitude or cold weather. In addition to rain gear, you should also pack two pairs of socks.

Mid-top or high-top boots are safer options for stability when dealing with rough terrain and heavy loads. On the other hand, trail running shoes can help you breathe better and move faster. If you’re planning on carrying a lot of weight, lighter shoes are ideal.

Emergency Aid

A first aid kit is also a great option if you’re planning on doing a lot of traveling. However, if you plan to use fewer resources, you can easily carry a waterproof bag. One of the most valuable tools you can take is duct tape, which can be used to repair or replace equipment.
